Boilers

Heat Exchangers

 

The testing of heat exchangers is the number one application of eddy current testing in industrial plants. Heat exchangers include condensers, general plant exchangers, feedwater heaters, air coolers and lube oil coolers. Both conventional and remote field testing are used. Conventional eddy current testing is used for testing non-ferromagnetic tubing, such as stainless steel, copper nickel alloys and titanium. Remote field testing is applicable for testing ferromagnetic tubing, such as carbon steel and nickel.

 

A unique problem that can occur in heat exchangers  are leaks in the tube sheet roll. This occur  when the tubes are over rolled under tubesheets – causing circumferential cracking. In addition, there can be circumferential cracks just behind the tubesheet. Such cracks can easily be missed by bobbin probes and require a special technique. Cracks under the tubesheet are detected using surface probes.

Paper Mills

 

Chemicals used in paper mills are often acidic or caustic, which increases the risk for corrosion and stress cracking. If not detected in time, corrosion can cause structures to fail or leak. Aqualified uses ultrasonic digital thickness testing to find material losses down to the thousandth of an inch. This allows for repair before a costly shut down. Cyclic loading from repeated movements can lead to cracking. Paper mills use very large pieces of equipment to turn raw materials into finished products. Each step requires a different machine and each machine requires periodic inspections to keep the operation running smoothly and safely.

 

Even with wireless technology available, there is still a large demand for paper products. Chemicals used in paper mills are often acidic or caustic, which increases the risk for corrosion and stress cracking. The cycling of heat, pressure, and moisture can lead to changes in metal structure. If not detected in time, corrosion can cause structures to fail or leak. ASTM International publishes standard practices that provide insight on what to inspect and how to inspect it.

 

We can perform inspections to detect surface and subsurface flaws on various components regardless of whether they are ferromagnetic, electrically conductive, welded, or painted. Visual inspections of welds is an efficient way to determine whether they are performing or failing. Acoustic Emissions testing uses ultrasonic transducers to “hear” if a crack is growing. Cast iron dryer drums are brittle, so if they are pressurized and remain stationary for too long, they are at a higher risk for failing to stay within their required tolerances.
