Ferrous Metal Sorting With Eddy Current

Aqualified’s Eddy Current Inspection Services can provide portable handheld Ferrous Metal Sorting in accordance with ASTM E 566 Standard practice for Electromagnetic (Eddy-Current) Sorting of Ferrous Metals.  This process is acceptable for determining impedance changes which may be caused by hardness, alloy variances or heat treatment differences including localized detection for metallurgical assessment of heat damage.  This process is commonly used in the automotive, Energy, bearings, amusement parks and oil & gas industries.

How to set up for Eddy Current Sorting Inspection:

Ferrous Metal Sorting

The nondestructive examination sorting process baseline may be set by balancing the NDE eddy current probe in air or on a known part by the NDT Level II Inspector.  In order to ensure success of the inspection it is recommended that samples of each material being sorted be provided.  If not possible the instrument may provide the data digitally by conductivity value or impedance graph lift off Pointe.  This inspection process may be executed with an absolute or differential probe and it is recommended to be performed in a controlled environment and laboratory.

For Eddy Current Sorting of Metals and Conductivity readings it is best to use a wide faced probe to provide consistent data reducing probe wobble and handling issues.  A Frequency must be selected that provides the optimum separation in the impedance plane graph.  This is usually as high as possible for ferrous materials sometimes causing a wide low frequency probe to saturate and stop working.  Caution shall be taken to account for magnetic fields when a material is magnetized and temperature shall be consistent from part to part and calibration standards.  The calibration specimen should be allowed to equalize to the same temperature as the parts being inspected.

Conductivity Sorting of metals with a nondestructive testing procedure is based on the comparison of an unknown with a standard.  Unless all of the significant interrelationships of metal being tested and properties are understood and measurable for both standard and unknown specimens, the test results may be useless.

Electromagnetic sorting with NDT is best used for repetitive tests on material “identical” in shape, composition, and metallurgical structure, and not for tests on grossly different materials.  Electromagnetic sorting is generally not useful if there is limited knowledge of the properties of the unknown or test material.
